Meet the MS nurse, Maureen

Maureen Ennis is Senior MS Nurse at the Princess Royal University Hospital

I lead the neuro nursing team at my hospital. I am a highly expert MS Nurse and an advanced nurse prescriber. Our philosophy is that we do not treat MS, we treat people. From there we provide expert assessment, advice and planning around the individual person’s needs, and the needs of the people involved in their care.

As I have been doing this job for 30 years now the biggest benefit I have seen is the change that medications can make in preventing disability. Managing the disabling symptoms arising from MS is still challenging.

We recently had a young lady in, mid 20s, with highly aggressive MS. She failed even on the most highly effective treatments. She was our first patient to have a stem cell transplant and arranging this through Covid and while she was relapsing was a challenge. I recently reviewed her one year post HSCT and she was doing really well, with no relapses. Six months further down the line she is pregnant with her first child. In a different time, she may not have met her life goals, such as having a family without significant disability. This makes me happy!

To anyone preparing for an appointment with an MS health professional, I’d say think carefully about what you want to ask. What things are worrying you? What if anything can you not do now that you would like to?
