This is a one-off masterclass focused on walking and is not part of our structured weekly classes.
This session will explore practical ways to support and enhance walking ability, helping to build greater mobility, stability, and confidence in everyday life.
As part of our masterclass series, this session builds on themes previously covered (available to view in the past activities section on the portal), with a dedicated focus on walking. Walking is often an area of challenge for people living with MS, and this session brings together key learning to support a more integrated and practical understanding of how it can be improved.
Walking is a complex activity that relies on multiple systems working together in coordination. These include balance, muscle strength, coordination, and accurate foot placement. Because of this, it can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint exactly where the challenge lies within the walking cycle. By breaking walking down into its key stages, such as lifting the foot, maintaining balance, and stepping forward, it becomes easier to identify the specific areas that may benefit from attention.
This masterclass will explore how to recognise these challenges and provide practical demonstrations to support improvement across different stages of the walking cycle. The aim is to help you develop smoother, safer, and more efficient walking patterns.
Our exercise specialist, Alan Pearson, will guide participants through each phase of the walking process. He will explain the concept of gait, outline the typical stages of the walking cycle, and introduce targeted exercises designed to support balance, coordination, and walking confidence.
