We are pleased to welcome back Dr Ruth Dobson, who will be presenting on behalf of MS-UK, sharing insights from her work on the UK consensus on pregnancy in multiple sclerosis, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). Dr Dobson is a leading researcher in the field of MS and related neurological conditions, with numerous publications to her name.
Originally published in 2018, the consensus was developed to provide clearer, evidence-based guidance on the management of MS during pregnancy and to support informed discussions between individuals and their healthcare teams. Research highlighted within the guidelines found that delaying or stopping disease-modifying treatments (DMTs) could increase the likelihood of relapses and potentially lead to long-term disability.
These guidelines aim to help people make informed decisions by outlining the risks and options available, drawing on data from pregnancy registries and clinical literature to cover key areas of family planning and MS care.
In this session, Dr Dobson will explore the main elements of the guidelines, including
She will also discuss new research and developments in the field since the original publication. You can access the full guidelines by visiting the BMJ here
To complement this session, MS-UK also offers a Choices booklet on Pregnancy and MS, covering topics such as conception, pregnancy management, and postpartum support. We encourage you to read it in advance or use it as a resource after the session.
Ruth is a Consultant Neurologist with extensive experience in multiple sclerosis and related disorders. Her current research projects include the role of the Epstein Barr virus in MS, and a multi-centre pharmacovigilance study in MS. She is also studying the role of modifiable factors such as vitamin D in the development of MS and its subsequent complications and is currently working on the development of a pre-symptomatic high-risk register.
Ruth studied at Clare College Cambridge before graduating with distinction in clinical sciences from University College London. She completed her PhD in 2013, having received funding from the Guarantors of Brain and an MS Society/ABN Clinical Research fellowship for this work. She has been awarded numerous scholarships and has presented her work widely at national and international level. She has published widely in the field of neurology, and has over 50 publications in peer review journals.
