volunteer for MS-UK

“It gives me a sense of purpose and joy”

Sarah volunteers for MS-UK and says it’s been a lifeline

I’m Sarah and I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) 17 years ago. I discovered MS-UK 10 years after my diagnosis in Colchester. Meeting other MSers was a revelation to me and put me on the road to accepting and living with my MS positively, which really improved my mental health.

I was suddenly able to access so many helpful services, information, alternative therapies, the local social group and positive support and the many wonderful people who ‘get’ MS in all its guises. Many have become firm friends.

This new support network became very important to me in keeping me positive, and when Vicky at the charity started the Peer Support idea, I jumped at the chance to volunteer as a Peer Pod host.

I host the Tuesday drop-in, which is all about having a good old chat, sharing experiences, asking questions or just listening and getting to know everyone.

During the last two years I’ve had very challenging health problems on top of my MS, but hosting the Peer Pod has been a lifeline for me, giving me a sense of purpose and joy at sharing other MSers’ experiences, challenges and news, as well as helping others to develop a lovely social network online with MS-UK.

I’ve also volunteered for MS-UK at a recent ‘Antiques Roadshow’ fundraising event by sitting at the MS-UK information stand. Again, this was a very positive experience for me and enabled me to make new contacts.

Volunteering for MS-UK when I can is very fulfilling and keeps me positive, even when my health is negatively impacting my life. I look forward to more opportunities to volunteer!
