August fundraisers of the monthPublished: 22 August 2024 Karen and Keynan Delaney took part in this summer’s Big Purple Wave, which saw people take to the water for an afternoon of white-water rapid riding at Lee Valley White Water Centre. Here, Karen explains why they did it We took part in the challenge this year as multiple sclerosis (MS) has always been a part of our family. My mum was diagnosed in the late 1980s having experienced symptoms for years before I am truly inspired by anyone who lives with a disability. Being a teacher of children with some of the most profound and multiple learning disabilities, I am inspired every day by what they can do and the progress they can make with the right care and education. I witnessed some amazing people with MS taking part in the white-water challenge – rolling themselves down hills to get to the water’s edge as it was quicker than walking. I know how reliant MS-UK is on money being raised, and it was a privilege to play a part in helping to raise some for them. I try to bring my children up to always think of others and encourage them to do what they can to help people. My mum was an inspiration – she never let MS dictate her life, she just made alterations to how she lived.
