Social group festive lunch

Posted on: December 19 2016

jclunch.jpgHi everyone, it’s Mike (aka Hunk of the Month), reporting from the Marks Tey Hotel in Colchester with the latest news from MS-UK Josephs Court. It was the social group’s festive lunch on Wednesday 07 December, it was totally amazing with 65 clients arriving in their festive jumpers. The venue was perfect, the staff were brilliant and the food was excellent,.

Everything went according to plan and the atmosphere was brilliant. They had an auction and tombola and guess who went around with the Santa sack full of baubles in it? Yes it was me. It felt strange going from table to table asking clients to pick a bauble from my sack, and the lucky people that picked one with a cross on it won a prize.

The clients came with one thing on their mind – to eat, drink and be happy and most pulled a cracker or two and put on the silly hats, the jokes were silly but it’s the way you tell um! Sadly I left as the singing started!!!

Well that’s all folks, watch this space for another exciting blog from me, Mike (Hunk of the month), or if you can’t wait until then, why not email me at michael@ms-uk.org

P.S check out our new opening times at Josephs Court on our website:
www.ms-uk.org/josephscourt.

Bye for now!

MS-UK Social Group coffee mornings

Posted on: December 05 2016

vicky-coffee.jpgHave you joined our Social Group at one of their coffee mornings yet?

If the answer is no, is it because, like me, the very words ‘coffee morning’ conjure up an image of little old dears sitting around in a village hall and putting the world to rights?!

Well then, I’m here to tell you that nothing could be further from the truth!

For a start, the Social Group are a lively bunch just on their own, but throw in a dozen or more other ‘MSers’, and what you’ve got is something that might be more suitably named a ‘giggle gathering’ or a ‘laughter lunch’.

Whatever the name, it is an opportunity for people living with MS (or other neurological conditions), to get together in a relaxed and friendly environment (you can’t get any more relaxed than a local pub!), to share their stories and experiences (and bad jokes), support each other through the not-so-good days – and most importantly- be themselves.

There is much to be gained from spending time with other people that absolutely ‘get it’, not least the realisation that you are not alone.

So please do come along to the next ‘coffee morning’….yes it’s held in the morning.…but there’s more than just coffee on the menu!

Held on the second Tuesday of every month from 11am at:
The Berechurch Arms
177 Shrub End Road
Colchester
CO3 4RG

Plenty of parking and wheelchair accessible

Next dates:
Tuesday 14 February 2017
Tuesday 28 February 2017
Tuesday 14 March 2017

Additional date

Friday 03 March 2017 – 2pm
at Perrywood Garden Centre
Kelvedon Road
Colchester
CO5 9SX

Working together with Clacton and District MS Society: Information day 11.06.15

Posted on: May 27 2016

Ryan from the MS-UK Helpline team has been invited by the Clacton and District Branch of the MS Society to be one of the speakers at their next ‘Information Day’ on Saturday 11 June at Holland Public Hall, Clacton-on-Sea.

The event is open to people with MS, carers, family, partners and friends and anyone with an interest in MS. The event will run from 10:00am – 3:30pm. If you want to come along and be a part of the day booking a place is essential. Please download the booking form and follow the registration instructions.

For people from the Tendring district of Essex this will be a good opportunity to mix with other people with MS, get some up to date information, learn from each other and the professionals involved. Along with Ryan, the programme is filled with interesting and engaging speakers. It’s a real mix of essential information and also a presentation that will be quite fascinating and out of the ordinary.

Fiona Symonds from Uttlesford CAB will be starting the day off. Fiona is a Volunteer Benefits Advisor from the West of Essex and she will be talking about what’s changing in the world of benefits. Fiona is a passionate volunteer and very knowledgeable on welfare rights issues.

There will then be a talk from Chris Wiseman the local MS Nurse. Chris is from Colchester Hospital University Foundation Trust. In addition to her presentation Chris will be allowing plenty of time for questions and answers from attendees.

After the lunch break Ryan will be delivering a presentation on ‘Exercise and Wellness’. Ryan will touch on the proven benefits of exercise for people with MS and also local resources to help remove barriers to activity including MS-UK’s local service Josephs Court. Ryan will be prompting participants to think about how they can look after physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing.

There will then be a talk from Barry O’Connell from ‘Canine Partners’. Barry will be talking about the benefits and support that a trained canine partner can bring to people’s lives. Although this service is not MS specific, it shows that the local branch is thinking creatively about the kinds of support people want and need.

Ryan and the MS-UK Helpline team are really looking forward to working alongside the MS Society local branch, showing that by working together we can support people with MS to be as informed as they can be.

The Helpline team say ‘watch this space’ for news about more work like this in the future.

Hi I’m Keith from the Social Group!

On Tuesday 12 April we held our first coffee morning at King’s Café in Stanway, Colchester. About 20 people turned up including those with MS, carers, friends and family and gave us all the chance to meet new friends and chat over a cuppa.

A member of the group even got approached by a lady in the cafe who is affected by MS and was interested in meeting others in the same situation as her. After a chat she was most interested in learning about MS-UK, and will be coming along to our next gathering.

Most of us stayed for lunch and finally got away after 4 hours of laughter and putting the world to rights. Everyone gave positive feedback on a much needed get together, and it was mentioned that any bright ideas for future events could be put into the suggestion box in Josephs Court.

Overall it was a successful get together and has brought fellow MSers closer together, giving them the confidence to mix with people with a similar condition and know that there are groups and charities out there offering help.

King’s Café proved to be a great venue, easily accessible and with plenty of space. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the menu reasonably priced. We have decided to return there for our next coffee morning and would like to invite you all to join us – the more the merrier….and laughter really is the best medicine!

Next coffee morning will be held on Thursday 12 May…

Also this month, we have been discussing ideas for a summer get together for friends and family. Plans are currently in the pipeline for a Family Barbecue to be held in August. We will share updates in the Josephs Court e-newsletter, which goes to all of the clients at Josephs Court each month.

As always, we’d love to hear any of your suggestions for enjoyable activities that can help us all make the most of today and live life to the full! Please put your ideas in the suggestion box at Josephs Court.

Best Wishes
