Today is Purple Tuesday, an international call to action to customer-facing businesses to put accessibility at the forefront of their company.
Coordinated by Purple, a disability organisation, the campaign aims to make businesses aware of the lack of accessibility currently in place for disabled people, and inspire them to make changes to improve customer experience.
The spending power of disabled people, which is known as the purple pound, is worth a staggering £2.25 trillion, but less than 10% of businesses have a clear plan to access this market.
The organisation is working with businesses such as Barclays, Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s. Each company must commit to at least one thing aimed at improving disabled customers; experience. The exact action taken is up to the businesses themselves and depends on their resources and needs.
